Vinal County, Ohio is a place where corn is king and soybeans are a distant cousin. The spires of regal Catholic churches rise out of the farm landscape and are living testimony to the faith of God-fearing farm families who lived here without change for generations. Then, one day the higher-ups in Rome decide to shut down these churches and make way for some good old-fashioned 21st century style efficiency. A mini-revolution occurs within the churchyard and the locks on the venerable church door is shattered, leaving it swinging in the wind, and the sanctuary open to all. A cast of zany characters emerge from Mary Barnette who dubs herself Pope, to the horse-riding, sheep-tending priest Fr. Ray, to a greedy parish priest who tries to cash in on the ethanol boom, to a group of Catholic royalists calling themselves the Defenders of the Door. The original contrary farmer himself ruminates on the nature of religion and belief in this barnstormer of a book. Razor sharp satire, flawless characterization, telling dialogue, and formidable comic situations make this third novel by veteran farm and nature writer Logsdon a must-read.

I'll start this review by stating that I am a huge fan of Gene Logsdon's work. I own almost every book he has written, and have read most of them multiple times. This means that I was eagerly awaiting the release of this new book. I was not disapointed!First, the good. It turns out that this book is sorta-kinda a sequal to Gene's novel "The Last of the Husbandmen". Several of the characters and locations from that story resurface here, and provide an enjoyable update to the lives of those folks and areas. The central story, however, is all new. I won't give any spoilers here, but I will say that depending on your religious and agricultural views you'll either be very upset or cheering along with the story's heroes. I fall squarely in the latter camp. (By the way, according to Logsdon, this story is based upon real events that took place in his community.)
The reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is some slight annoyances I found with repetition that I had not experienced before in Logsdon's work. For example. the main character is too frequently referred to as "that heathen bitch" by the story's antagonists. I don't have a problem with the language, just the repetition. Similar instances are present; however, I am not going to mention them because, hey, maybe it's just me.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I know I will revisit, especially after re-reading "The Last of the Husbandmen". I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Pope Mary and the Church of Almighty Good Food Gene Logsdon 9780978967642 Books Reviews
With great humor and insight, Gene Logsdon exposes the hypocrisy of the Roman Catholic hierarchy's attempt to close a country parish in a fictitious midwest diocese. A feisty young woman returning to her roots, the young parish priest, along with the good and faithful parishioners, create an alternative "church" that proves to be a very tasty treat. In the process, some sacred cows are put to pasture and some maligned sheep are given their dignity. Those who have experienced the actual "closing" of their family churches should enjoy this immensely. They might even recognize some of the characters.
This book was so great i just could not stop reading until it was done. And it had a very great message in it.
I love a subtle satirical quality and this book is very good in that respect. You get the big time ag guy, the greedy, the stubborn, the stupid, the disgusting, the decent, the lofty, the narrow minded, the adaptable, the practical and the plain old sneaky, often several of those qualities in the same characters. It's a strong broad social statement set in a rural area and it's both touching and very funny. It's engaging escapism that says plenty worthwhile to be guilt free. Inspiring even. Don't worry about several of the characters seeming to have come from other of Logsden's works, just enjoy it! I certainly did and it's a "keeper".
